Full Moon Release Ritual

October 18, 2021 Mindfulness

Guide to a Full Moon release ritual

Like the New Moon, the Full Moon is another phase of the moon cycle that we can use to help us grow spiritually and emotionally. The Full Moon metaphorically shines a light on our shadows so it’s the perfect time to perform a Full Moon Release Ritual. This is when we look at the parts of us that aren’t so pleasant to look at and release emotions and energies that no longer serve us. Get your Full Moon ritual sheet here.

Like any ritual, this is a great time to clean up and set the scene for the next phase of life!

Cleansing for the Full Moon:

Cleanse and clean your space. I love setting my cleaning schedule up with the moon phases, and it makes the chore of cleaning more meaningful to me. After I clean, I cleanse my space. Learn how to cleanse your space here!

I will then take a cleansing bath (in my freshly cleaned bathtub) with purifying Epson salts and some herbs that make me feel relaxed. I throw in some chamomile flowers and rosebuds, and add in a couple drops of essential oils of choice. Usually, I throw in bergamot since I just love the scent.

Meditate and Ground:

Meditation and grounding are staples in any ritual. This helps clear the mind to make room for mindful healing. Once again, I am plugging my favorite meditation channel: The Honest Guys. I love their grounding meditation, as it isn’t very long.

Setting Full Moon Ritual Space:

After I am cleaned, cleansed, and grounded I like to set up a little area where I will be performing my ritual. Usually this is my coffee table or dining table, but if the whether is nice I will go outside. I like being outside because the light of the full moon is a powerful symbol for the ritual.

I like to include quite a few things in my ritual including:

  • A journal (for the ritual practice)
  • Crystals to raise the vibration and help focus my intent
  • Palo santo for protection and raising vibrations
  • My tarot cards to give me my energy reading for the full moon
  • Candles because I think they are cute and I love a good, witchy atmosphere

For the metaphorical meat and potatoes of the ritual, I have provided a Full Moon Ritual download here. These are journaling prompts to help you release on the Full Moon.

Don’t know where to start? Here’s a pro-tip: use the themes of the zodiac that the Full Moon is residing in to focus your intention!

Full Moon Ritual Journal Prompts:

Gratitude & Achievements

As with the New Moon Ritual, for the Full Moon Release Ritual I like to write down gratitude and achievements. This part helps keep your brain in check, so we can keep positive vibes through the ritual. I usually do achievements in the last month, but you can do in the last 2 weeks, or if there is anything that has happened that has been in the works for a while.

I also use the Full Moon as a chance to look back at the goals I wrote down on the New Moon 6 months prior. This is because a New Moon will cycle into the Full Moon in the same zodiac in 6 months. This is where we see our long term manifestations come into reality.

Release

The Full Moon’s energy makes release what we don’t need in our lives all the more powerful. Is there an energy that isn’t serving me? Do I need to break a bad habit? Is there toxicity in my life that I need to let go of?

Once I identify what I need to release, I will come up with 1 or 2 actionable items that I can do to help me remove the negativity.

A good example is: I need to release my fear of success- my fear of extra responsibility, a fear of failure. In order to do this, maybe I need to set aside time each morning to plan out my day. I can also do positive affirmations each morning before I work.

Divination:

This part is totally optional, since you may or may not feel comfortable with divination. I like to pull some cards to get a collective energy reading from this phase of the new moon. Some people use pendulums, tarot cards, tea leaves or even scrying from candles. The Full Moon opens up our psychic activity, giving us an opportunity to receive messages from the universe.

How will you be utilizing the Full Moon? What do you have to release?

How To Become Environmentally Conscious

September 24, 2021 Mindfulness

A Beginners Guide

If you care about the planet and the place we live, there is a reason to be environmentally conscious. I would love to go on and on about global warming and the effect of how much garbage we produce as a species, but chances are that you already know that, or have an idea of how bad it is.

Just like most things in improvement, there is a lot of unknown and overwhelming information regarding becoming environmentally conscious. Yes, purchasing an electric vehicle is better for the environment, but if you are not in the financial situation to do that, then there are other ways to help save our planet without putting yourself in debt.

Environmental Mindfulness

Being mindful of the products we use, and the waste we create is the very first step to becoming environmentally conscious. Taking a look at our everyday actions, and reflecting on which of those we can change is the perfect start to becoming environmentally conscious. For instance, if I journal my actions for a day, it may look something like this:

  • Take a shower
  • Brush Teeth
  • Go grocery shopping
  • Go home and get ready for brunch
  • Visit friends for brunch
  • Come home and write
  • Cook dinner
  • Clean the kitchen
  • Take the dog out for a walk
  • Make a cup of tea
  • Brush teeth
  • Go to bed

Taking Environmental Mindfulness To The Next Step

Now that I have my day written out, I can go through all of my actions and see if there are ways that I can clean up how I affect the environment.

Some example questions that I would ask myself are:

  • How long am I taking in the shower?
  • Do I leave the water running when I brush my teeth?
  • When I go to the grocery store am I reusing bags, or getting new plastic bags each time?
  • If I get new bags, am I reusing those for various things like smaller trash cans or dog poop?
  • When I leave the house am I turning off/up the A/C to save on energy/costs?
  • Am I turning off all the lights when I leave?
  • When I cook dinner, am I efficiently using my pots and pans to save on dishwasher room?
  • When I clean, am I using reusable washcloths and towels?
  • Do I let the water faucet constantly run while I wash dishes?
  • Am I leaving doors and windows open while the A/C or heater is running?
  • Am I reusing the grocery store bags to pick up dog poop? (For some people, are you even picking up your dog poop- and to these ones: shame)
  • When I make my tea am I using recyclable/compostable tea bags or loose leaf tea?

Keeping Your Environmental Goals Attainable

These are just examples of many different types of ways to start thinking more consciously about the environment. A lot of actual changes depend on lifestyle and whether or not it’s feasible. A working mom of two may think that it would be absolutely ridiculous to ditch disposable diapers for cloth, as she would need to wash them and have to spend extra up-front money on making sure she had enough to last. Maybe you live in a hot climate, and it’s not possible to turn off the A/C in the summer (or turn off the heater in the winter). The beautiful thing about being environmentally mindful means that you can choose what you can control.

It’s important that anyone who is trying to make life changes for the environment doesn’t feel ashamed of what they aren’t doing. It’s easy, with any kind of self-improvement, to compare yourself to others, or think poorly of yourself (or other people) for not being able to be a Self-Sufficient Environmentalist. It takes baby steps that work for your routine and lifestyle to make changes that will last a lifetime.

What have I done to make myself environmentally mindful?

Since I have been consciously thinking about how I can take my own baby steps to become environmentally friendly, I have:

  • Removed paper towels from our household
  • Removed disposable soap containers (I purchase a big container every few months and refill my soap dispensers)
  • Buy more groceries in recyclable jars and cartons vs plastics
  • Use reusable bags when shopping for groceries
  • Swapped my sparkling water cans for a soda stream
  • Make one Amazon purchase per month instead of several spread through weeks (not only has this helped with carbon emissions, but it prevents me from spending as impulsively and encourages local shopping: see Pillars of Self-Care)

None of these things happened overnight. It took time and conscious effort to make these changes. I am also very grateful that my husband seems to roll with the punches because some of these aren’t exactly convenient. My next plan of action is a simple change: purchasing water containers and utilizing those when I go places rather than purchasing plastic water bottles.

What kind of changes would you like to see in your daily life, or what changes have you made (and are proud of!), to be more environmentally friendly? Let me know down in the comments, or share your wins with me on social media!

Spiritual Cleansing & Energy Cleansing Methods

September 3, 2021 Self-Care

Three Ways To Spiritually Cleanse Your Home

Why Spiritual Cleansing Is Important

When I first started on my mental health journey, I realized how important and powerful the act of spiritually cleansing your living space can be. A physically clean space makes a huge difference in moods, productivity, and more. A spiritually clean space allows for personal growth and should be on the list of things to do to help you on your self-improvement journey. See my post on self-care to get started on your own journey.

Imagine a room with dirty laundry everywhere, cups piling up the nightstand, papers strewn about. Now, imagine the feeling of this room suddenly clean! What was once overwhelming and repulsive becomes inviting. It now gives off a feeling of satisfaction and ease.  We can say the same thing about energy or the spirit. Think about all of the things that happen in a single home or living space. Arguments, work, children, parents, among many other stressors, can affect your home’s energy. This also includes the energies that we pick up when we are out and about. Have you ever gone to the store, only to come back irritated? It’s because our bodies pick up and latch on to the energies around us! This is why it is so important to implement spiritual cleansing in your home!

I find that spiritually cleansing my space once a week usually keeps my home positive, but there are definitely times (especially working remotely) that I may need an extra boost. I usually like to cleanse after physically cleaning, but sometimes cleaning isn’t necessary to refresh the energy.

What Exactly Is “Spiritual Cleansing”?

Many people also refer to spiritual home cleansing as “smudging.” This is certainly a type of cleansing, which uses sage. Because smudging is typically done as a spiritual ritual in the Native American community, it is usually considered a “closed practice.” This means that only people who are specifically trained in the act of smudging are supposed to perform the smudging ritual.

Using sage to spiritually cleanse, however, does not mean you are smudging. There is a lot of debate on whether or not using sage in itself should be closed. Because of the popularity of cleansing rituals, white sage has been considered an endangered species and should be purchased cautiously. Some small farmers grow sage and sell it for spiritual practices, and if you want to purchase sage, this is the direction I would recommend. It is important to note that sage is similar to a spiritual bleach. It removes ALL energy from the space, where other methods remove negativity and replace it with positive and protecting qualities.

If I have you on the fence about sage, not to worry- There are other methods of spiritually cleansing your home that does not require the use of sage (or smoke at all)! I will explain below in my 3 ways to cleanse your living space! Don’t forget to scroll all the way down for extra tips!

Smoke Cleansing

This is probably the one that most people think of when spiritually cleansing a space. We already talked about the implications of sage, but there are other amazing herbs you can use that will get the job done!

Rosemary and lavender are great alternatives to sage. There are other herbs like sweetgrass that you can use for smoke cleansing, too! You can find bundles of these herbs off sites like Etsy or through local metaphysical shops. For the environmentally conscious, check the descriptions and reviews to make sure they are ethically sourced.

Palo Santo is another popular smoke cleansing tool. I prefer the smell of Palo Santo, and it also has elements of good energy and protection properties. There is some debate online if this is ethical because a species of Palo Santo is endangered. However, it is not the same species that you find for cleansing.

I love using incense as a way to cleanse the energy. Dragon’s Blood is popular for its protective qualities. Jasmine is a wonderful floral scent that also releases positive energy. Incense is also great because they make specific burners to help keep the cleanup easy and are generally safer than burning the herbs outright.

WARNING: With burning anything, always remember: safety first. Make sure any incense is in a proper burner, or if you are burning herbs to use something that is flame resistant to catch the ash. If you live in an apartment or dorm do not burn herbs or incense if it is against your lease.

Sound Cleansing

I love this method because it’s easy and cheap. Sound has proven effects on our bodies and mental states. Certain frequencies can program our brains to feel more at peace, energetic, or motivated. Sound is an amazing way to spiritually cleanse the energy in your home.

There are loads of youtube videos that have home cleansing frequencies. I love putting these on in the background while I clean and during meditation.

Some people use Himalayan singing bowls to create a frequency throughout their homes and living spaces. Other people may use bells or wind chimes. In fact, wind chimes used to be a way that people would ward off evil spirits.

Another, simpler way to clear out negative energy with sound is clapping your hands! Get the stagnant energy moving from room corners by loudly clapping or singing in those areas.

Auric Spray Cleansing

Auric sprays are a wonderful way to spiritually cleanse your space discreetly. Auric sprays use crystals and essential oils infused with water (use moon water to make it even more potent!) so you can spray and cleanse your aura. I love this method because not many people question a nice smelling spray! You can purchase pre-made auric sprays, but they are easy to make as well! I like to use moon water in mine to give it an extra boost of protection.

Here is an article on easy Auric Spray recipes.

Bonus Cleansing Tips:

When cleansing, there are a few key factors to keep in mind.

  1. Open a window- You have to let the negative energy out somehow. If you are cleansing and there is nowhere for the negative energy to go, it remains stagnant! Open doors and windows to release the negativity, and it will also bring fresh air back into the space.
  2. Safety first- as mentioned above, especially when working with fire, keep safety your top priority. This also goes with allergies. If you or someone in your home is sensitive to smoke or smells, the best route may be doing a sound ritual instead. If you have certain allergies, check the ingredients and essential oils in any Auric Spray or Incense. Small animals may be sensitive to smoke so be sure to have them exit the area before smoke cleansing. Certain essential oils may also be toxic to small animals, so make sure you research the ingredients around dogs and cats first.
  3. Have fun with it and make it your own- There is no “one way” to cleanse your space. What may feel liberating and freeing to one person can feel like a chore and an annoyance to another. Cleansing your energy should feel good and be something that you enjoy and look forward to. If you want to just sit and meditate on positive energy flowing through your home, and that works for you- then you already have your home cleansing ritual!
  4. Cleansing your space is the perfect way to begin a New Moon or Full Moon Ritual!

How do you cleanse your home’s energy? If you have any extra tips, let me know down in the comments below!

Let’s Talk Self-Care & Self-Care Ideas

August 13, 2021 Self-Care

I LOVE self-care. I have so many self-care ideas, because as women especially, we are constantly told that we need to give and give. In my personal opinion, giving yourself what you need instead (and then some) is the best way to start becoming the best version of yourself.

What is the first thing you think about when you think of self-care? Is it massages? Getting your nails done? Going out for a nice meal?

While these things are really great, they are only surface-level self-care routines. Real self-care comes from the nitty-gritty, and it takes the dreaded W word- work. I have included my self-care ideas for you to get started on your self-care journey!

Self-Care Can Be Fun

Self-care is work, but it can also be really fun. 100% of the time you will feel better and see progress. There are three pillars of self-care that need to be addressed:

  • Financial Self-Care
  • Physical Self-Care
  • Mental Self-Care.

These pillars rely pretty heavily on each other. Think of these pillars as a triangle: 🔺 if one of the legs of the triangle is off, then the triangle as a whole is unbalanced.

The Breakdown

Financial Self Care

I’m just going to get this one out of the way. It is the least “fun” self-care pillar, but one of the most important. Financial instability is the leading reason for divorce and 16% of suicides are financially related. I won’t delve too much into financial stability because that can be a blog post (or website) on its own.

I will say, society tells us that in order to be happy we need to spend, spend, spend. We get a quick endorphin rush every time we swipe that credit card, however, this can lead to debt and in turn depression, anxiety, and a myriad of issues that can become life-long leeches.

Spending is fine, as long as you can afford it. If you have some extra cash to go get that massage by all means do it! But don’t think that if you can’t, that means you aren’t taking care of yourself. All of the advice for self-care that I give will be free or low-cost.

If you are looking for financial advice, there are a ton of really great podcasts and books! The Broke Millennial is a good starter’s book for those who don’t know how credit works, what an IRA is, or what compounding interest means. I also highly recommend The Financial Feminist podcast. Tori is a 27-year-old self-made millionaire who got her start by saving 100k by the time she was 25. She breaks things down to be relatable and talks about the wage gap between women, men, and minorities.

If you like social media and are pretty gung-ho on trying to get your collective shit together, I recommend following these people and others like them. Surround yourself with people you want to be like so you can then emulate them.

Physical Self-Care

Everyone knows that physical self-care is important, but a lot of the time it’s the most stressful one to think about (even over money!). There are a lot of myths around physical self-care, plus the fitness and health industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that can be extremely overwhelming.

Here’s what you need to know to get started:

Listen to your body- this isn’t to deter you from pushing and challenging yourself to things that are more difficult than normal (by all means you should ALWAYS try to challenge yourself), if you are on the verge of injury, or if you are dehydrated, take that break and drink water!

Small exercise IS exercise- going to the gym and getting on the squatting rack after 5 years of sedentary lifestyle is not the ideal way to re-introduce exercise. Not only will you most likely be so sore you won’t go back to a gym for the next 5 years, but it is also DANGEROUS. Work your way up there. Take daily walks and go a little bit further each day. The best thing I ever did for my physical health was getting a dog. I don’t recommend doing this unless you are able to take care of a pet (both financially and emotionally/physically) but it IS a great way to get you out of the house! Lily got me out of the apartment twice a day and it really helped boost my energy and I actually found a nature trail that was right behind our apartment complex at the time!

Physical exercise also boosts your endorphins, which can have such a positive impact on mental health! (see the triangle of pillars!)

Eating mindfully- Notice how I said “mindfully” and not “healthy”? Healthy gets such a bad rap- and for good reason. When I think of healthy food, I think of celery, carrots, peas- GROSS! Healthy doesn’t necessarily mean that you eat like a rabbit, and it should be the end goal, however, we are talking baby steps to success!

Eating mindfully can mean different things for each person- maybe it’s logging calories for some people, or for others it’s paying attention to what kind of food they are putting in their bodies. Want that donut? Eat that donut, but also realize you need other nutrients to make your body the most productive you can be!

Mental Self-Care

Mental health has been such a huge hot topic for the last few years. This is great! The more people talk about it, the more it becomes the norm for us to take care of our minds like we would our bodies! The downside of this is that we see more and more “mental health” resources that may actually do nothing for our mental health. (see financial self-care pillar)

I am going to break down what you can do for your mental health into two segments: the fun stuff and the not-so-fun stuff

Fun Stuff:

Relaxing- you MUST take time for yourself, and yourself alone. This can include anything from a 30-minute bubble bath or steaming shower to a day at a peaceful air BnB (depending on your personal situation). Whatever this time looks like for you, turn off the phone, get off the ‘gram and just take in your environment and appreciate this time that you decided to dedicate to yourself.

Meditation – this goes in the fun pile for me. I love a good guided meditation. There are loads of options for free on YouTube, or you can use a meditation app such as Calm. A lot of people have the misconception that meditation is to be without thoughts, or you have to focus on one color or thing. This is why I like guided meditations- they allow you to think with the guide rather than let your thoughts roam freely. But whatever works for you, is how you should do it.

Hobbies – hobbies are productive things that you enjoy doing that may or may not have an end goal. Writing, reading, crochet, cooking are all examples of hobbies. A hobby is not watching TV until the crack of dawn. A hobby should be something that enriches your life and brings a sort of meditative practice.

The Not-So-Fun Stuff

Reflection – this one I think is the most difficult phase of self-care. Nobody likes to admit their weaknesses, and we sure as hell don’t like to look at them for too long. Unfortunately facing our pitfalls headstrong will help us to be better in the long haul.

Therapy – Getting a third-party professional to help guide you to become the best version of yourself can go a long way! Even if you don’t think you “need” a therapist, you can use one. You don’t have to have a mental illness or go through trauma to get therapy. The only downside to this is that sometimes it isn’t covered by insurance and can be costly. There are apps that advertise free therapy though! If you have used any, let me know in the comments your experience.

Journaling – Journaling can be a chore, but for self-care it is imperative. The benefits of journaling are:

  • You can see how your thoughts change through time and where your headspace is at the time of writing
  • You can see growth and setbacks
  • It can help make you recognize triggers early on
  • You can bring this journal to your therapist and get better help
  • Writing is a skill that can benefit daily life

If you don’t know where to start, or journaling sounds overwhelming to you, there are mental health-specific journals available on Amazon. These give you guided prompts and help lead you through your journal entries.

Ok let’s back up a little bit- this probably sounds really daunting, especially if you don’t have any of the self-care pillars built up yet- that’s ok! We don’t need to work on all three pillars at the same time. What is most likely to happen is that once you start working on one pillar, the other two will fall in line.

Like I said before, each pillar holds the other pillar up. How so? Because if you take care of one, you might start to find that you take care of one or two more pillars. When I started going to therapy and meditating, I started craving the feeling of paying more attention to my body. I started eating mindfully because it made me feel better. Then I started exercising, and the list goes on. Saving money and paying off credit card debt gives the same type of high. If you are like me, and when you are in a bad mental state the credit card comes out. Better mental health = less frivolous spending.

Start Small

Just take it day by day; one foot in front of the other, and so on. You don’t need to completely overhaul your budget on day 1, and you don’t need to jump in on that CrossFit membership day 1 either. Also, allow yourself to make mistakes. No one is perfect, and you shouldn’t have that expectation for yourself either. We crawl before we learn to run and that applies to your self-care routine as well.

Let me know in the comments how your Self-Care Pillars affect your life! Do you have the same ideals around self-care? What tools do you help with your self-care routine?

If you liked these self-care techniques and routines, check out my New Moon Ritual!

New Moon Ritual

August 6, 2021 Mindfulness

New Moon Ritual. How to do a new moon ritual in 2021.

The lunar cycle is a representation of the cycles and ebbs and flows of life. Each phase represents a time to reflect and take action. The New Moon is the perfect time to reflect on the achievements that have been made, resetting, and thinking about new goals and manifestations.

The best way to do all of this is a ritual, and here is a ritual that I do every New Moon in 2021:

Clean up

Tidy up your living space. The best way to start thinking about the next steps is on a clean slate. This is not only metaphorical for our goals and manifestations but physically being in a clean space makes it easier on our mental health.

Cleanse The Space

Spiritually cleanse your space. There are many ways you can cleanse your space including sound, smoke, water. If you choose to smoke cleanse, make sure you are using ethically sourced material and study up on the implications of using sage. Sound cleansing is one of my favorite ways to cleanse, and YouTube has many home cleansing videos you can pop on the TV! You can also use moon water, or even using a broom to “sweep” away the negative and stagnant energy.

Clean Yourself

I love to take a bath with Epsom salts (Epsom salts are cleansing and purifying in their own right), candles, and some relaxing meditation music. I just imagine any negative or excess energy melting out of my pores and going down the drain at the end. No bathtub? No problem- you can do this in the shower instead!

Grounding Meditation

Now that your house is clean, your energy is clean, and your body is clean, clear your thoughts with a grounding meditation. Again, endless choices on YouTube- no subscription required!

I make my meditation choices based on how long they are. Sometimes I am down for the 20-30 minute meditation, other times 7 minutes gets the job done.

Make Some Tea

Once the cleansing and grounding are done, I like to add another layer of relaxation with a nice cup of tea. I do this ritual in the evenings, so herbal teas such as chamomile are perfection.

Journaling

Get your FREE New Moon journal entry here!

This is the meat and potatoes of the New Moon ritual. Once you are bathed, grounded, and tea is in hand, find a quiet place that you can sit and focus. I like to keep calm, meditation music in the background to set the atmosphere.

Gratitude

The first thing to journal is gratitude. Write down what you are grateful for, especially looking back at the last month.

Achievements

Next, journal about all of the achievements you made in the last month. Every single small win you had counts.

Goals

I write my goals in 3 steps:

  1. What to work on in the next month. This can be spiritually (I want to meditate 5 days a week), physically (I want to go to the gym 3 times a week), or anything else (I want to plan my work days every morning)
  2. Think about what you want to achieve in the next month. Is there a meeting you want to absolutely crush? Is that content you have been thinking about doing still sitting in the back of your mind? This is the chance to put those into writing.
  3. Think about any long term goals and what you can do in the next month to step towards that goal. The easiest way to achieve those long-term big goals is baby steps.
Manifestation

As you are writing and thinking about these goals, take some time to imagine exactly how you would feel when those moments or things happen. Reflect on your pride, joy, and happiness. Everything that you want is within your reach. Write down those goals as if you have already achieved them.

After I finish manifesting, I close out the ritual with some divination. There are a ton of great new moon tarot spreads, but I particularly like the new moon spreads by Labyrinthos. You can also do divination with tea leaves, or try scrying into a candle flame.

If you do this ritual, let me know how it goes in the comments!
