The lunar cycle is a representation of the cycles and ebbs and flows of life. Each phase represents a time to reflect and take action. The New Moon is the perfect time to reflect on the achievements that have been made, resetting, and thinking about new goals and manifestations.
The best way to do all of this is a ritual, and here is a ritual that I do every New Moon in 2021:
Clean up
Tidy up your living space. The best way to start thinking about the next steps is on a clean slate. This is not only metaphorical for our goals and manifestations but physically being in a clean space makes it easier on our mental health.
Cleanse The Space
Spiritually cleanse your space. There are many ways you can cleanse your space including sound, smoke, water. If you choose to smoke cleanse, make sure you are using ethically sourced material and study up on the implications of using sage. Sound cleansing is one of my favorite ways to cleanse, and YouTube has many home cleansing videos you can pop on the TV! You can also use moon water, or even using a broom to “sweep” away the negative and stagnant energy.
Clean Yourself
I love to take a bath with Epsom salts (Epsom salts are cleansing and purifying in their own right), candles, and some relaxing meditation music. I just imagine any negative or excess energy melting out of my pores and going down the drain at the end. No bathtub? No problem- you can do this in the shower instead!
Grounding Meditation
Now that your house is clean, your energy is clean, and your body is clean, clear your thoughts with a grounding meditation. Again, endless choices on YouTube- no subscription required!
I make my meditation choices based on how long they are. Sometimes I am down for the 20-30 minute meditation, other times 7 minutes gets the job done.
Make Some Tea
Once the cleansing and grounding are done, I like to add another layer of relaxation with a nice cup of tea. I do this ritual in the evenings, so herbal teas such as chamomile are perfection.
Journaling

This is the meat and potatoes of the New Moon ritual. Once you are bathed, grounded, and tea is in hand, find a quiet place that you can sit and focus. I like to keep calm, meditation music in the background to set the atmosphere.
Gratitude
The first thing to journal is gratitude. Write down what you are grateful for, especially looking back at the last month.
Achievements
Next, journal about all of the achievements you made in the last month. Every single small win you had counts.
Goals
I write my goals in 3 steps:
- What to work on in the next month. This can be spiritually (I want to meditate 5 days a week), physically (I want to go to the gym 3 times a week), or anything else (I want to plan my work days every morning)
- Think about what you want to achieve in the next month. Is there a meeting you want to absolutely crush? Is that content you have been thinking about doing still sitting in the back of your mind? This is the chance to put those into writing.
- Think about any long term goals and what you can do in the next month to step towards that goal. The easiest way to achieve those long-term big goals is baby steps.
Manifestation
As you are writing and thinking about these goals, take some time to imagine exactly how you would feel when those moments or things happen. Reflect on your pride, joy, and happiness. Everything that you want is within your reach. Write down those goals as if you have already achieved them.

After I finish manifesting, I close out the ritual with some divination. There are a ton of great new moon tarot spreads, but I particularly like the new moon spreads by Labyrinthos. You can also do divination with tea leaves, or try scrying into a candle flame.
If you do this ritual, let me know how it goes in the comments!
